70th Anniversary Commemoration

June 6th, 2014, marked the seventieth anniversary of D-Day, one of the most pivotal events in World War II. This massive seaborne invasion, the largest in history, was the culmination of years of meticulous planning and execution by Allied forces.

The Assault on Normandy

At 07:45 hours on June 6th, 1944, the tanks of the 1st Hussars (a regiment from London, Ontario) landed on the beach facing Courseulles-sur-Mer, followed by a wave of infantry. The landings were met with heavy resistance from German forces, but the Allies were eventually able to establish a foothold on French soil.

The Battle of Normandy

The Battle of Normandy raged for over two months, from the D-Day landings on June 6th to the encirclement of the German army at Falaise on August 21st. It was a brutal and costly campaign, but it ultimately resulted in a decisive Allied victory.
