A member of the NBA's 50th and 75th anniversary teams, West was a 12-time All-NBA guard and a key member of the Los Angeles Lakers' championship teams in the 1970s.

West was born in Chelyan, West Virginia, in 1938. He played college basketball at West Virginia University, where he was a two-time All-American. He was drafted by the Lakers in 1960, and he played for the team for 14 seasons.
